Case Study

While colorful, these parts featured in the photo have mechanical stresses and therefore require a strong bond between the first and second components. Furthermore, these parts also have several critically shaped and sized outer rings used in their assembly. Note that the rings are being carefully formed with undercuts in the tooling, which creates the need for a tightly controlled process.

Challenge:

The manufacturing requirements involve Two Shot injection molding with high volume requirements. Significant considerations included color changeability as well as functional undercuts which increase molding difficulty.

Solution:

Advent implemented 64 cavity tooling (32 first shot and 32 second shot), with a rapid color change hot manifold. Finally, the tooling was inserted with specialty tool steels in areas of high wear.

The Result?

Durable tooling and an economical part.
